WEST SPACE, MELBOURNE, 27/9/01 - 13/10/01
The Eurotrash images were selected from a found collection of thousands of discarded photographic slides, they are at once without a known history or author. In making this series it was my intention to explore and to a certain degree exploit what I perceived as inherent “tensions” in the found photographic images that form the pictorial core of the series. Each image became a type of prompt for an intervention that sought to engage with visual, historical and conceptual undercurrents implied by the series of images themselves. This intervention took the form of a process of recontextualisation and abstraction in which the original images placed into a relationship with abstracted counterparts. These abstractions used the images themselves as raw visual material. I perceive of the works as being composed of/in stratum both in a pictorial and conceptual sense, of layers of pictorial intent and signification, intentional or otherwise.
