EMPTINESS PROJECT
SCOTT DONOVAN GALLERY, SYDNEY, 6/5/04 - 29/5/04

The Emptiness Project is the title of a body of work I began in January 2002. Using a combination of photographically based images and somewhat more ambiguous video footage the project was conceived to explore a very particular facet of the contemporary cultural landscape. It uses as a starting point the surviving architecture of failed or abandoned commercial enterprises in regional Australia. Expanding on this to include a video based inventory of accompanying charity shop wares the project as a whole stands as a catalogue of melancholy, paying witness to the passage of the twentieth century through its residue.

This project has been assisted by the Commonwealth Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body
