PHOTOGRAPHS
This section of the site is an attempt to
gather single photographic images that i have exhibited in recent times in group shows and stand-alone contexts. In each case i have thought of these single images as operating on their own terms, without the support of a broader conceptual framework that series of images posses. It is this very singularity that
I value in the images and more generally in photography itself. It is my intention that each images carries with it a proposition regarding the world that
it shows the viewer.
Before (2000/2006). This photograph was taken from about half way up one of the twin towers at the World Trade Centre in September 2000. It was exhibited in a cropped form in Scott Donovan's Black Box at Loose Projects in Sept 2006. At the time I took the image I was struck by the vertiginous aspect of the view and I remember thinking of the composition in terms of a photograph by Moholy Nagy taken from a similar vantage point. I am now struck by how such a seemingly innocent application of formalist aesthetics has been transformed into a most haunted view.
Untitled (2005). A photograph exhibited in the show Early Fabricated at Peleton Gallery Sydney in October 2005. Curated by Salvatore Panateri, Early Fabricated sought to examine the links between contemporary ideas of "minimalism" and architectural photography. I was concerned that the image would be open to readings other than pure formalism. Architecture suggests the provision of a residence, a living space. A function that these boxes were clearly not designed to perform. However, it is a function that they fulfil with alarming frequency. Early Fabricated was shown at the Center for Contemporary Non-Cbjective Art in Brussells from 1/12/06 to 14/1/07.
Cliff Dweller Society (2004). Various sizes. Exhibited in the group show at Scott Donovan Gallery Sydney 2004 (Lamda Print on Alupanel 1000mm x 810mm.) The image was also included in the Lake project at Taipei Artist Village, (TAV) Gallery, Taiwan (edition of 20 lambda prints 508mm x 410mm) where it was accompanied by this text.
Untitled (2003). This photograph was taken at the same time as the emptiness project. to date it has been exhibited once, with the interactive stop breaking down, in the group show Junket. Junket was curated by Jane Polkinghorne at the ICBC, Instituto de Baja California, Tijuana Mexico from 6 August to 6 September 2004.
